Tim Sachse, a concierge at Hilton Berlin, is gearing up for a once-in-a-lifetime trip that’s neither work travel nor a typical vacation. Sachse is set to go on a Hilton Thrive Sabbatical, in which he will take his wheelchair-bound father on an RV excursion through the countryside of Sweden and Norway.
As one of 10 winners of the second annual Hilton Thrive Sabbatical: Give a Dream, Live a Dream program, he is receiving four weeks of paid sabbatical time, as well as a travel allowance and camera to document the journey.
Tim recently shared his story and discussed the value of corporate sabbaticals with Adam Grant, an organizational psychologist, Wharton Professor and New York Times bestselling author. Hilton has partnered with WorkLife with Adam Grant: a TED original podcast to share more about its industry-leading benefits such as Thrive Sabbaticals.
Although common in higher education, Adam discusses on the podcast the rarity, and value, of sabbatical programs among other employers. “It’s pretty rare for companies to offer sabbaticals, though, and many of the ones that do provide time off to learn new skills. Hilton’s program is different: you can use the time and funding for any dream,” Adam said. “How cool would it be if every company had a sabbatical program like that?”
“I’m thrilled to be partnering with Hilton – they’re pioneers in reimagining work to help people thrive,” Adam said. “The opportunity to speak directly with Team Members has provided me with a glimpse into Hilton’s culture and the people programs that can turn dreams into realities.” To hear more of Tim’s story, download and listen to this week’s episode on Spotify, Apple Podcasts and Google Podcasts.
In a separate upcoming episode, Adam also speaks with Hilton Team Member Rick Nelson on his personal experience with another industry-leading program, the Adoption Assistance Benefit. Introduced in 2017, Hilton contributes $10,000 to Team Members to help offset the cost of adoption. Watch Rick’s story and hear more later this season on WorkLife.
Hilton’s Thrive Sabbatical program is open to both hotel and corporate Team Members as part of Thrive@Hilton, an enterprise-wide commitment to creating a great workplace to work for all – one that enables growth and development, balanced with time to focus on body, mind and spirit.
Hilton’s commitment to workplace culture and people programs has been recognized with the company recently ranked as the best place to work in the U.S. and earning the second spot on the World’s Best Workplace list.
