Skip the Crowds and Savor the Views: The Best National Parks to Visit this Fall

Fall marks the beginning of cooler temperatures, as the scents of sunscreen and views of sandy beaches are replaced by pumpkin spice-filled aromas and the charming colors of changing foliage. For travelers, the switch in seasons also means that crowds at popular summer vacation destinations dissipate, leaving you more room to soak up the scenery in hotspots across the nation.

Now is the ideal time to explore the best natural wonderlands that the U.S. has to offer, as you can bask in beautiful national parks unburdened by crowds. To make the most of your trip, plan to visit one of these five parks, which truly come alive each autumn.

No Reservations Required

U.S. national parks have seen increased visitation in recent years, leading many to institute reservation systems that make it hard to gain access during peak travel seasons. Consider visiting these popular parks in fall, when restrictions are lifted.

In 2024, Washington’s Mount Rainier National Park joined the ranks of popular attractions that instituted a “reservation only” system for access to the park. But visitors who arrive after Sept. 2 will find that reservations are no longer required for this active volcano, making fall the perfect time to hike amongst the scenic subalpine wildflower meadows that surround the mountain’s peak.

Where To Stay

When it comes time to settle in for the night, make a break for the conveniently located Hampton Inn & Suites by Hilton Tacoma/Puyallup. Located right off major thoroughfares that lead to Mount Rainier, it serves as a centralized hub for visiting many of the popular sections of the national park.

Glacier National Park

Timing a visit to Montana’s Glacier National Park can be tricky. The park’s stunning Going-to-the-Sun Road often doesn’t clear of snow until mid-summer, at which point crowds descend on the destination, making park reservations hard to come by. However, beginning Sept. 8, reservation requirements subside, as do the crowds, making this the ideal time to explore the region’s glacial peaks, carved valleys, and turquoise lakes.

Stop at overlooks throughout the park for jaw-dropping views and hike to Avalanche Lake where you can watch as waterfalls stream down from melting glaciers before making your way to the nearby Hilton Garden Inn Kalispell, which offers an indoor pool and casino, along with a stunning location in the Flathead Valley.

Autumn is also an amazing time to visit the awe-inspiring red rock formations of Zion National Park. While this popular Utah hiking spot is busy in any season, access to hotspots is easier to come by after summer ends. The park does not require reservations to enter, but you will need to enter a lottery to traverse some of Zion’s biggest draws, including the harrowing Angels Landing climb.
